Abstract | Many Asian countries realized that small and medium enterprises play the important role in their national economies. It is found that SMEs make a major contribution in creating employment, generating income, fostering economic growth, promoting rural development, and alleviating poverty. Because of SMEs' characteristics of flexibility, innovativeness, and provision of seed-bed for large firms, they are targeted by the policy instruments and measures of many countries for industrial restructuring, private sector development, and economic recovery goals. As they are now seen as a business sector with the brightest future, the accelerated development of SMEs is therefore intensely pursued in many developing countries. This research study try to make a comparative study of the national experiences and the government policy measures for t)leir development in three selected Asian countries-Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia. Also, Thailand, as a country undertaking the reconstruction of its economy after the crisis through serious promotion of SME sector, should be aware of the implications of the lessons drawn from the development process of the experiences of other two countries. The long-term contribution of SMEs to the economic future of Thailand could be improved with policy and programs aimed to develop the skills and capabilities of SME entrepreneurs and performance of SME enterprises |
