AbstractThe rapid growth (25%-30% per year) and high competition of Vietnam's plastics industry in the line with the challenges of the new entry of Vietnam into AFTA (2003) require plastic companies to equip and prepare capable human resources for their sustainable development. In that context, managers in plastic companies are changing from task-oriented to people oriented management so that they need to be professionally trained in leadership. Therefore, they perceive the importance of skills to grasp and make use of information about the business environment, to make satisficing decisions, to motivate people, to coach subordinates, and to manage conflicts, etc. In addition, to improve and renovate the technological infrastructure of the companies, they should update the knowledge of plastic engineering in order to be able to search, select and appraise technological projects. Training courses can be provided in forms of short courses to top managers, or formal training to young or middle and line managers. However, training and development are still under-recognized by most of the managers. They preferred self-training and excused it for financial and time constraints. The linkages between the industry and training providers will be helpful to make them realize the importance of training and development practices. And then such linkages can benefit to the both sides in improving the effectiveness and quality of training
