AbstractIn this research, the possibility of using Oil Palm empty fruit bunch as papermaking fiber was investigated. Paper properties made from oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) had been investigated and compared with mixed tropical hardwood (MTH). Fiber properties comparison between EFB and MTH shows that those fibers are quite similar. Further investigation shows that even though they have quite similar fiber properties, they behave and respond differently during papermaking process. Experiments done as part of this research were mainly focussed on the possibility ofreplacing part of MTH fiber with EFB fiber in fine paper and paperboard grade. Results gained from the experiments show that small addition of EFB pulp improve paper properties such as smoothness, formation, tensile and tear, but it has negative effect on bending resistance.
