AbstractAttenuation due to rain has long been recognized as a major limitation to reliable communications system operating at Ka band frequency. A reliable prediction of rain attenuation is therefore necessary for a system designer to realistically determine the link availability and provide a means to combat the rain effect. In this research several rain attenuation prediction model are presented, such as CCIR, Garcia, Sam and Crane-Global models. Three models were selected for calculating rain attenuation in three regions of Vietnam. They are CCIR (1987), CCIR (1992) and Garcia Models. The predicted rain attenuation has been applied to evaluate the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of 3 duplex satellite links operating at bit rates of 64 kbps, l 28kbps, 1.544 Mbps, 2.0488 Mbps and 5 Mbps. From the calculated BER performance, the ma1Ximum rain rate thresholds, which can meet the BER performance requirements of different information bit rates in three regions of Vietnam, Hanoi, Hue and HoChiMinh City, were determined. In this research, the required transmission power was also calculated for each earth station with different requirements of BER performance. The results shown that the required transmission power is increased when the rain rate and the bit rate are increased
