| Abstract | Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third generation mobile radio communications system that supports wide range of services with different bit rates and quality of service on a single mobile terminal and wideband DS-CDMA has been selected for the UMTS radio interface standard. For UMTS, data transmission services require BER of 10"6 or lower with very high bit rates up to 2 Mbit/s is allowed. To satisfy both BER and high data rate transmission, very powerful forward error correction codes should be used. In this research study, · performance of Turbo codes and serial concatenated convolutional codes (SCCCs) with different constraint lengths over frequency selective Rayleigth multipath fading channel in a wideband DS-CDMA based system for UMTS requirement is investigated through simulation and the performance comparison between Turbo codes and SCCCs is carried out. Only low mobile speed of 5 km/h is considered. Simulation results show that both Turbo codes and SCCCs can meet the demands of UMTS. It was further observed that when increasing the constraint length from K =3 to K =5, a little better performance could be obtained at high SNRs in the case of Turbo codes and the performance of constraint length 5 SCCC is worse than constraint length 3 SCCC in who.le range of SNR corresponding BER > 10·6.Moreover, the Turbo code schemes give a very good performance compared to SCCCs schemes for BER above 10"6 |
