AbstractThe purpose of this study is two-folds. The first objective is to provide an overview of Pakistan's tourism industry. The second objective is to look into the problems faced by the Tourism Industry of Pakistan and to provide recommendations for policy makers, keeping in mind the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that the Pakistan Tourism Industry is faced with. From this research, we found that the tourism industry can make important contribution to the overall growth of the Pakistani economy. Tourism can increase the country's income, employment, and foreign exchange earnings. During the research we found that Pakistan has a lot of potential to create an affluent tourist sector and can attract much needed foreign exchange and international support. The country is currently lacking the infrastructure and transportation facilities to attract masstourist, and most important, the perceived political instability of the country keeps tourists and, hence, investors away. The political and military malaise and instability is perceived - rightly or wrongly - by the outside world as the main reason to avoid traveling and investing in Pakistan. Problems faced by the Pakistan Tourism industry are divided into six main categories: government level problems, problems faced by tourists, environmental problems, institutional problems, marketing problems, and cultural problems. To promote its tourist sector - in fact, an economic activity - the government has to create a good investment environment in order for money and eventually tourists to flow in. Initially, globetrotters and traditional backpackers should be targeted in order to gradually expand mass-tourism. Facilities and infrastructure can develop with the expansion of the focus groups. It is clear that the major challenges for the development of a tourist sector in Pakistan lie with the government.
