Abstract | China has been enjoying a rapid economic growth at an average rate of about 9.7% since the initiation of the reform in 1979. Due to its great economic achievements in the past two decades, China becomes the center of concern. As the most populous country in the world, the development of China is obviously an international issue rather than China itself. Recently, several researches were set to find out the cause and sustainability of the growth by using different approaches. This paper, based on the findings from some of the former researches, is trying to conduct an extensive study on the source of the growth. In addition, as a major part of this article, the problems that facing the economic reform in China are disclosed and analyzed. A general outlook of China's economic prospects in the coming 5 years is given in the last part. There are several engines that boosted the Chinese economy to a rapid growth. According to their attributes, these sources of growth can be categorized into two groups: internal sources and external sources. Labor, capital, technology, infrastructure and government roles are the major internal forces that promoted the economic growth. While, the external resources of the growth could be attributed to the increase of foreign trade and FDI. Under the pa1ticular circumstances, WTO accession is another external boost for Chinese economy. In this information era, the contribution of technology in improving productivity is the largest. Hence, in a long run Chinese government should put more effort on improving the education level of Chinese people and set more measurements for motivating the R&D activities of Chinese companies. Despite the huge achievements that the refo1m has got, there are still some obstacles lying ahead. The stagnating SOE reform and problems from the financial sector are two main headaches for the Chinese leaders. Besides, some se1ious social problems like the urban unemployment need to be dealt with properly and urgently. Generally, those problems are controllable, but this will constrain the further achievement from the reform if not solved appropriately. The first five years of the new century, China's 10th five-year plan period, is a critical period for China's economic development. Whether China can achieve its third strategic goal of social and economic development, the petformance of economy in the next five-year period will be a cornerstone. Development has been set as.the main theme of the 10th five-year plan and improving the living standard of the people is clarified as the ultimate goal of the reform. In the next five-year period, the project of developing western China would be the emphasis of central government. This project will accordingly create a huge market for domestic companies and will definitely be an impetus to the economic growth. Based on the analysis, we can draw a conclusion that China's economy in the near future is promising although there are still some problems lying ahead of the reform. To keep a healthy growth rate of the economy, Chinese government need to accomplish many works in the coming few years. |
