AbstractThe Internet Data Center industry developed as a result of relaxation of telecom laws. They evolved from being simple storage center to facilities offering connectivity, security, scalability, interconnectivity and value added services. The industry is in the growth stage showing great increases in both demand for space and revenue. In the value chain they lie between the basic infrastructure layer and the solution layer. However, given the lack of differentiation, product complexity, ease of entry, the number of players entering the industry is weakening the competitive edge of the companies. Traditional product differentiation is failing; investors are shying away, profits look uncertain, share price is plummeting, and expansion plans being revised downwards. The new focus for developing competitive advantage should focus on relationships. Demand is shifting more towards managed solutions and corporates (MNCs and SMEs) rather then traditional IDC customers - like telecoms and ISPs - dominate the bulk of the demand. To tap into this market, the IDCs need to adopt a verticalization strategy. They should look to multiple strategic partnerships with ASPs across and into industries. This is because the ASPs form complementary partners, offer strong customer interface, and is a fast growing market itself.
