Abstract | The Internet is the single most pervasive and potent agent of change in modern society. Like any trade name, logo, or brand name, a domain name represents a part of business identity - something customers and business associates can recognize, remember, and positively associate with services or products. Registedng a domain name will at very least prevent someone else from using it. The domain registration service itself is a cash-cow business as well as support to interrelated services like web hosting, web designing and ecommerce solutions. The growth of Internet as a market and a tool in India is a development which evokes global aspirations - as well as concerns about equitable access to the technology in the country. Myanmar, neighboring country of India, is still in infancy stage at the Internet development. It has still monopolized Internet access by government department like India's early 90's. Being an ASEAN member, Myanmar has to liberalize its Internet environment. Since Myanmar legal system is similar to Indian legal system, Myanmar should learn and imitate India's trends in Internet development. By reviewing India's learning experiences, there will be a good and appropriate recommendations on the Internet domain name registration services in Myanmar context. For the purpose of the study, (5) person from academic institution and top level management of RSPs were asked by semi-structured interview method. The data was collected from top and mid-level management personnel of Registration Service Providers (RSP) in India. The secondary data, which constitutes kinds of policies, laws and current situation in both countries, was collected mainly from Internet, newspapers, magazines, enewsletters and India and Myanmar Government Institutions. The researcher also visited 152 active RSPs' web sites and collected some useful data. The study found out certain advantages and disadvantages of the domain name registration services by RSPs in India. The advantages seem to override the disadvantages and most of the disadvantages are such that can be overcome with cooperation and coordination among RSPs and industry institutions. Only the disadvantages that might be difficult to tackle is government rules and regulations. After completing the research it can be concluded that India RSPs market has in hold great opportunities which can attract customers abroad in gTLDs sectors. But the role of multilingual domain in India and Myanmar do not seem to be important until near future since Internet users in those countries used English as second language. The recent Myanmar situation is quite similar to early time situation of Indian market in general, the learning experience on India market can apply in the Myanmar context. The study could produce some recommendations on future RSPs business in both India and Myanmar, and some suggestions on customers who use those services. Although this study has weaknesses in sample selection and in sample size, I believe that it will give some general knowledge and information on gTLFDs and ccTLDs domain name registration services in India and Myanmar. |
