AbstractThe new global economy is characterized by an increasing pace in competition while old rules of competition are changing radically with the diffusion of information technology, especially the Internet. It has become common knowledge that companies will have to adapt to new ways of conducting business electronically, which facilitates unprecedented efficiencies compared to more traditional business methods. Furthermore, the debacle of the dot-corns has shown that without transforming to an e-business platform, e-commerce can not be executed effectively. While e-commerce represents a transactional nature of business over the Internet, the concept of an e-business encompasses all business and functional processes linked electronically with stakeholders and hence is able to create more value for every web-enabled business and its customers. E-business vision requires simpler electronic interfaces and increased communication networks between all concerned participants. Telecommunications companies are playing a major role of enablers by building an infrastructure layer for the new global economy. This research study is an attempt to understand e-business development initiatives in global telecommunications (vendor) companies, and to explore how the enablers are being enabled themselves. It addresses major issues associated with transformation to an e-business design and determines the most important e-business-enabling components. As this topic is nascent and evolving, this research paper provides general guidelines for the transformation into an ebusiness based on company findings.
