AbstractElectronic commerce or e-commerce is gammg increased popularity worldwide. By definition, it covers the range of online business activities for products and services, both business-to-business and business-to-consumer, through the Internet. Due to its benefits both for buyers and sellers, it is obviously becoming a new trading channel that no business can ignore. Hence, companies worldwide in various industries are placing great effort to be online as fast as possible. Nevertheless, due to the many cases of website failures, there is still doubt on the actual compatibility between different types of business and the concept of electronic commerce. This research examines this issue with the case of the Thai textile industry. This industry is chosen because it is one of Thailand's key strengths, as production requires craftsmanship skilled that could not possibly be imitated by others. The industry is one of the important sectors that contribute to the economic growth of the country and thus, if the industry could be moved online, it would certainly bring great benefits as a result of market expansion. The result of this research shows that similar to many other types of machine-made textiles namely cotton, yams, and polyester, Thai textiles could be sold via electronic commerce. Despite such result, however, results also reveals that the proposed business concept could not successfully be implemented at this moment due mainly to the problems of the industry being unstructured and declining market demand both domestic and international. The study shows that successful electronic commerce business does not depends solely on the compatibility of the physical characteristic of the product and the e-commerce concept but also on other important factors such as the industry's readiness. Electronic commerce, therefore, is about effective management of the business process rather than the development of the website store-front.
