AbstractDeveloped countries have been using information technology extensively in various industries (manufactming as well as services) especially for industry that is heavily dependent on information, like banking industry. IT is changing the way banks operate. It is affecting the entire process by which banks create their products and also is reshaping the product itself; the entire package of services and information that bank provide to create value for their customers. IT is changing market characteristics. Markets are no longer building on face-to-face interaction. The conversational dealing systems are replaced by real time updated communication networks. IT has spread to the banking and financial service sectors in developing countries. Nowadays, IT is used by Thai banks as a competitive weapon, as a new channel to contact customers and offer new products and services. This research study presents the cun-ent situation of IT use in Thai banking industry, analyzes the impact of IT use on Thai banking industry, and assesses the trends of IT use in banking industry. Moreover, this research uses the Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) as a case study to present those issues at the level of the film. Based on the study, IT investment in SCB appears to be underutilized. However, the bank should continue to invest otherwise bank will face the possibility of losing competitive edge in the future. In addition, the bank should apply first-mover strategy to attract customers without the presence of competitors by investing in new value added channel and outsource utility business application. Further, SCB should use multi-channeled distribution strategy and customer relationship management strategy to retain existing customers and acquire new customers.
