AbstractThere are more than 1100 communes in Vietnam, with 2.9 million people in remote rural areas that not connect to the national grid by 2010. So the local energy source is needed to satisfy the demand. This study is a preliminary attempt to identify the potential of isolated mm1 hydro generation option for rural electrification in remote area in Vietnam. This study analyzes the data available on new sites to determine those that have adequate resources and are near enough to potential users. Key data will include: capacity, annual kWh production, annual household and other electricity consumption, total investment cost. .. The Among 167 identified mini hydro schemes, there are 138 schemes are economical viable. These schemes can supply electricity to more than 35000 households in the remote areas. In a specific case study, the viability of hydropower is analyzed in case of changing in demand of electricity and load factor. It is found that with high demand and high load factor, mini hydro generation based off-grid is predominant option of rural electrification.
