Abstract | This research examines how entrepreneurial motivation, strategic orientation and operating behaviors of entrepreneurs/owners/managers relate to the performance of firms. This research is analyzed on the data of 70 entrepreneurs in Hochiminh City. The find ings show that financial rewards are the first class motivators. More important, the motivation toward entrepreneurship is proactive. About strategic orientation, there is a generic style that entrepreneurs emphasize on stability, reactivity to market change, while carefully focus on technology innovation and product/market opportunities, with neutral attitude towards risk and uncertainty. Entrepreneurs seem to focus on hot issues in business practices of operating behavior, more familiar w ith big, strategic, and abstract issues than with operational, tactical behaviors of management. The pattern implies the lack of operating management skills of entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurship profile for under-40 entrepreneurs. The relationship is that the higher challenge and strategic orientation seem to lead to higher perceived sales growth of the firms while the first mover advantage and operating behavior factors do not lead to higher business performance. The higher challenge of motivation also means the higher intellectua l challenge of creativity, oppo1tunities, and expertise as well as the psychological challenge of personal sense of accomplishment. The higher on strategic orientation is the consistent pattern of generic style. |
