AbstractVietnam is one of the developing and transition economies which started its reform in banking industry in the last few years. Indeed, in the process of the Vietnam 's industrialization and modernization it has required a sound and stable finance background. Failures of the banking system and bad debt have strongly affected the growth rate and contribute to the decline in industrial production and foreign investment. Therefore, banking industry has had to improve more in order to contribute effectively to social economic development and renewal of the country. Coming from the practice demand, the research has analyzed deeply the business activities of banking industry especially in lending activities and also has generated the structure and history of Vietnamese banking system. The research has analyzed the credit management of Vietnamese commercial banks and found out some typical reasons of credit risks. These reasons have come from macro environment, and commercial banks as well as borrowers. From that, the recommendations are given to not only commercial banks but also Vietnamese Government. These recommendations are both "situated" recommendations and "strategic" recommendations. This creates the important and necessary perquisites for the business of commercial banks in Vietnam safer, more stabilized and more efficiency.
