AbstractThe maintenance services in the aircraft hangars of the Thai Airways produce a reasonable amount of wastewater containing toxic substances from chemical solvent, aviation fuel, lubricating oil and hydraulic oil. Thai Airways established a waste treatment system in 1993 on the northern section of Bangkok airp01t to treat these wastes. The operation was fine until 1997; the color of the effluent became darken and gave strong odor. Thai Airways started to investigate the problem. Their initial c01Tective action was to reduce the waste load feeding into the treatment system. The method gives some improving result but odor and foul color recur from time to time. A research under supervision ofUEEM/AIT was conducted in June 2002 and found that, the root causes were overdosing of chemical additives used in the process and the excess amount of oily waste released from the system producing anaerobic condition in the effluent holding tank. The initial corrective action was to reduce the odor by aerating the effluent holding tank, which proved to be successful. Further corrective plan together with guidance for cost reduction were drafted and given to the Thai Airways Technical and Maintenance Department. The plan also proposes that once the project for improvement has started, a monitoring program should be carried out for at least three months to ensure the faultless operation at all waste load.
