Abstract | Fiber orientation is another feature of real paper. It is an alignment of fibers in the machine direction. The fiber orientation of paper directly affects the in-plane mechanical properties and dimensional stability of paper. That is why it is very important to develop a fast and reliable laboratory measuring methods in being able to control fiber orientation. Nowadays, there are some measuring methods available to measure the fiber orientation. One of them is Image analysis. This study addresses on testing and implementing a new method, which is a tape-splitting method combined with scanner based orientation measurement system (Image analysis). The reliability, repeatability and limitations of the system were assessed and analyzed and the new method was used to analyze the anisotropy, misalignment angle and md/cd of mill made paper under different forming conditions and the split layer used to obtain the filler distribution throughout the thickness of the paper. The results showed that the new method is repeatable and reliable, since the results obtained from the new method are consistent and significantly equal to the results from zero span tensile tests. Analyzing mill made paper under different forming conditions showed how the forming process has an influence on fiber orientation. An improved instruction for tape-splitting method and a user's manual for the Fotocomp Orientation program are also constructed within this research study. |
