AbstractThis study aims at examining the impact of resettlement by Thilawa Special Economic Zone on young women and men in Myanmar. By using qualitative methodology with a focus on gender, it looks at changes in youths’ livelihood and factors which affected their employment choices after displacement by the SEZ. The study found that although their income earning activities are affected or even lost by displacement, youths generally hold positive outlook for the SEZ. Yet, their employment options are limited by several reasons such as lack of suitable and acceptable jobs, access to information, social network, and employment process. Moreover, gender role and parents’ expectation have an influence on those young women and men differently. The evidence for this study indicates women’s responsibility as caretaker of family members and men’s responsibility as breadwinner are rather strengthened after displacement. Consequently, while men tend to fall into jobless with despair, women are losing their opportunity even they are given more employment opportunities at the SEZ. In the end, both young women and men are still facing difficulties in developing livelihood after displacement. This study concludes that gender awareness needs to be promoted among all the stakeholders and the support which are tailored to the youth’s needs should be provided so that those displaced young women and men as well as investors can benefits from the SEZ.
