Abstract | Vietnam has 3200 km long coastal area and the mangrove forest cover an area of 170,000 ha. Mangroves are amongst the most important and productive component of ecosystems. They not only provide a several types of products, but also protect other ecosystems in coastal zone. Giao Thuy, the study area, is the first Ramsar site of Vietnam with the total of mangrove forest area of 12,000 ha. The people's participation in rehabilitation and conservation plays an important role in Mangrove Forest Management in Vietnam. This study is conducted with the objective of assessing the local people's participation in Mangrove Forest Management at Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province, Vietnam and to imply the ways in promoting people's participation in mangrove forest management suitability and effectively. The finding of the study shows that local people's awareness is closely related to their living, short term benefits interest them much more than long term benefit, and the motive of participation in Rehabilitation Project (RP) of almost all of respondents are income. However, 90 % of respondents are willing to participate in Mangrove Forest Plantation (MFP) without wages. Almost all of information and knowledge about Mangrove Forest Management (MFM) was compiled through local meeting. The respondents who are female often have lower awareness level than male, but participation degree in RP and Mangrove Resources Utilization (MRU) did is not show significant difference between male and female. The respondents who have high education level often participate in Local Government office or Local Organization, so they have higher awareness level and participate in meeting, management and operation of MFM more than others. According to the goal of RP, poor people are included to participation giving high in the project priority, so poor households in large numbers often participate in MFP than rich households. The main causes of Mangrove Deforestation (MD) at present are over exploitation of mangrove resources and competition in utilization of coastal land use. The success of RP is dependent on the ability oflocal leaders very much, and their prestige and efficient management affect the attitude of local people in MFM. Giao An and Giao Lac communes are among successful places of Mangrove Rehabilitation Project (MRP) at Nam Dinh and Thai Binh provinces, because the project has mobilized local people's participation in planning, implementation and management actions. However, the project has some weakness as well which can to avoid in planning and implementation of similar project in future. |
