AbstractNowadays, the promising trend of using acacia based fine paper is increasing due to its superior printing properties. Good printing properties always play important role together with runnability in fine paper, but runnability of acacia till now is still questionable. Therefore, this experiment was thoroughly done to predict the runnability of acacia through the evaluation of refining effect, softwood and fillers additions on dried, never-dried acacia and birch. Runnability of wet papers was predicted by evaluating the wet web strength, apparent strength and relaxation at two dryness levels. However, combination effects of fracture toughness damage width and apparent strength were used to determine the runnability of dry paper. Runnability of never dried acacia and dried acacia are similar based on some predicted prope1ties of runnability. In wet paper, dried acacia was predicted to have the best runnability, while runnability of birch is being the best in dry paper. However, adding 20% of softwood to dried acacia improves its runnability tend to be the best in dry paper.
