AbstractThis study investigates the living conditions and transportation use among women migrant workers of the garment factories in Hlaing Thar Yar Industrial Zone, Yangon, Myanmar. In order to understand the living conditions of women factory workers, the physical and social situations of their housings were focused in this study. The accessibility and safety issues were emphasized to interpret the transportation situations of women factory workers. Moreover, this study also analyzes the impacts of housing and transportation problems on the socio-economic situations of women factory workers. Further, it also explores the existing policies and practices of government and in the workplace that are affecting the housing and transportation situations of factory workers. This paper uses the qualitative data collection and data analysis methods. In this study, indepth interviews were conducted with 45 migrant women working in garment factories in the Hlaing Thar Yar Industrial Zone of Yangon by using the snowball sampling technique. In addition, ten key informant interviews were undertaken with governmental officials, parliament member, factory owner, private-rental housing owners, and NGO representatives. According to the findings of this study, four types of housings are available for factory workers in Yangon such as private-rental housing, factory-provided housing, NGO’s shelter, and squatter housing in the urban slum near the industrial zone. Among these four types of housing, the private-rental housing is the most common type of housing for women factory workers. However, these housings fail to enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of the factory workers since its physical and environmental conditions are poor. Further, although most of the factories provide the transportation service for their workers, its quality is substandard. The experiences and barriers identified by the women are contrasted with the existing housing and transportation policies to articulate the ongoing policy gaps related to the strategies implemented by both the previous and current governments.
