AbstractThe idea for this study was based on the observation that Vietnam is facing a serious shortage of IT/ software expe1ts for its promotion of IT/software industry as an attempt to integrate into the world knowledge-based economy. Companies in software industry have been said to cope with risk of losing employee. In preparing themselves for new opportunities they come up with a problem of retain their best people. Viewpoints of management of 22 software companies in Ho Chi Minh City were studied in various retention factors. The study has uncovered the management's perception, awareness, beliefs, principle, practices, assessment and even maxims in people retention. Analysis was based on a new conceptual framework and took into account the overall view of software industry in Vietnam. A number of recommendations were also made to software companies, relevant governmental agencies and other interested parties.
