AbstractThe suitability of acacia (Acacia mangium) pulp for making woodfree coating (WFC) basepaper had been studied. The evaluation is done by comparing it with the other two kinds of commonly used raw materials for this purpose - eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) and Nordic birch (Betula pendula & Betula pubescens), upon the critical properties required by WFC basepaper at the basis of same strength and roughness level. Results show that acacia is a superior new raw material for WFC basepaper in that it produces paper of excellent formation and smoothness, outstanding bulk and bending stiffness, high light scattering coefficient, good tear strength, acceptable porosity and oil absorbency. However, it also shows difficulty in refining and relatively poor paper strength compare to birch and eucalyptus.
