Abstract | Steel is the most important, multifunctional and most adaptable of material. Since years it has a key position in the industrial socirety and still countinue in modem era, even to the non-industrial society too. For Thailand, steel industry is initiated as a market-oriented industry. The industry just had been liberalized in year 1994 thus most of the new entrepreneurial manufacturers are using new and advance technology than any other countries in South East Asia. Despite the country's technological competitiveness, until now there is no real upstream production establish in the country. This research explores the present situation of the industry in Thailand, its challenges and inhibitors in order to propose the plausible prospects for industry's practitioners particularly to the trader. The foresight scenarios technique was chosen to be the research's methodology, as it is the proactive tool for foreseeing the future. The first stage yields the two industry scenarios: Consolidation Leans Toward Power and Flexibility Leads to Exploit Nicheization. The constructed stories have been spun around three crucial factors that is the political uncertainty, the successful of steel producer consolidation and the trends from Information Technology. Next is the integration stage. Those two industry scenarios were transformed into flatter shape in order to integrate it with strategic planning. For this purpose, three tree scenarios complexities were developed and pruned later by using Case-Based Reasoning and Robustness actions. The results at final stage indicated that in next ten years, two events will not happened that is the steel's upstream production and E-commerce On the other hand, the producer consolidation will occur but in difficulty. The recommendations given to trader are based on the concept of 'thinking wider but invests smaller'. The Cold-Rolled steel products are in a good trend. The finished-products steel importers should focus their core competency in high-grade steel, which cannot produce domestically. The local traders should transform themselves to be as procurer for end-product users and quickly adopt the Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR) programs as the company's facilitated tool. |
