Abstract | The purpose of this research study is mainly to examine the overview and structure of pulp and paper industry in China, and analyzing the competitiveness of this industly. At the same time, it dete1mines the opportunity and challenges of the industry. On the basis of the analysis of external environment and the industrial stlucture, the character of the pulp and paper industry in China was drawn. Its technology is still far behind the standard in developed countries, low quality paper, low productivity, lack of economies of scale and low consumption rate per capita. The competitive structure and entry ba1Tier is also considered as medium. All these characteristics of the industry provide some opportunities to the existing producers or new entrants, also presenting some significant challenges to them at the same time. There are many aspects of opportunities and challenges existing in the pulp and paper industty in China, despite the past economic growth. In this research, the opportunities and challenges are capacity expansion, industry upgrade and securing of wood pulp. Capacity expansion can be done by adding new machine, building new and state-of-art pulp and paper mill, integrated mill and minimill. These expansions need huge investment so foreign direct investment is welcomed. Industry upgrade can be done in many ways such as technology transfer, improving product quality and human resource management. Securing of wood pulp through plantation management is also useful for pulp self-reliance in long- term. |
