AbstractThe Wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode (WA TM) is a combination between Asynchronous Transfer Mode (A TM) and wireless technologies. It increases the capabilities of A TM to provide multimedia service to mobile users. When mobile users are moving between different areas of base stations, the handover process is required to handle the services. To provide lossless handover, the cell buffering is required. However, it can induce cell delay variation (CDV) which impact to CBR type video service. (Thongjuapet, 2000) proposed the downstream buffer analysis at mobile terminal (MT) and base station (BS) to suppress cell loss and CDV for homogeneous case. To study the behavior of buffer at MT and BS for heterogeneous case, thus this is the interesting topic to study of this research. In this research, we study the behavior of buffer at MT and BS for heterogeneous case under the same conditions as homogeneous case. The distribution of BS and MT buffer size occupancy, cell loss ratio and cell delay variation are observed in this study. we can conclude that the shape of distribution and the range of BS buffer sizes are affected by the handover-cross-load. When the numbers of each type of source are changed under the same handover-cross-load, it does not have much impact to the distribution of BS buffer size. To compare the distribution of BS buffer occupancy size of both heterogeneous case and homogeneous case, we can conclude that under the same environment, the properties of BS buffer behavior for both cases are not different. For cell loss ratio, the characteristic of cell loss ratio is decreased sharply when cell loss ratio is lower than 10- 3 , under this cell loss ratio the range of BS buffer sizes is wider when handover-cross-load is high. For MT buffer, the downstream transmission rate of network (Rd) affects to the MT input interruption time, which controls the distribution of buffer size. The transmission rate of MT source (Rm) impacts to the size of MT buffer. The size of MT buffer can absorb the jitter at the output of MT buffer.
