Abstract | In the field of KM, which has been the focus for researcher over the past five to ten years, there exist a great deal of ambiguity. This thesis aims to identify processes within the concept of KM and its knowledge transfer processes, in which it becomes possible to translate tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge, and enhance knowledge innovation. Siemens, being awarded seventh best Knowledge Enterprise in the world, was the case study adapted in order to identify intra knowledge transfer processes in an MNC. In order to obtain in-depth information a case study was adapted. The findings within Siemens concluded on the success of their KM strategy implementation and identified its knowledge transfer mechanisms being the most suitable for translation of tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge. This concludes the findings on the success of person-to-person knowledge transfer were the best interaction adapted for tacit knowledge transfer and machine-to-person was more applicable for explicit knowledge transfer. Furthermore, it was established that transferring expats was on a decline and the adaptation of sending local employees to HQ to gain on-the-job training to obtain tacit knowledge proved successful. The application of the Knowledge Value Chain model proved useful as an analysis tool to determine an organization's overall knowledge performance. |
