AbstractWeb-based document management provides a secure repository for project documents as well as a convenient archive for previous or currently unused documents. In such an environment, users can search across multiple files on a web site to find files to download. That helps to reduce printing cost and shipping costs and allows wider dissemination of information because of savings on reproduction and shipping costs. The present study describes a prototype for a web-based construction documentation system and generation of standard data exchanging format in XML technology. This system has the capability. of web database application and XML data generation, which is an efficient globally acceptable data-exchanging format between applications or companies. XML data have also flexibility to bind any scripting languages for display in the web browser in either tabular or other required formats. The major benefit is the unlimited space for storing the data and structure the complex data in either tabular or tree format due to use of XML technology. In this system, the database application was developed using MS Access 2000 for integration with web sites and construction documents. This developed system provides an organizational format to store, update, present and retrieve the construction documents such as daily reports, safety notices and photo records. This system allows users to document and retrieve project information in the form of text data, XML data, image file through www from remote sites. The key benefit of this system has also capability to generating XML data from stored database. Since XML use data only for describing in standard structured format, it needs help of XML related language such as Style sheet Markup Language (XSL) and XML Schema to present the XML data in web page dynamically. This system has also capable to take decision on web page such as sorting the data. Therefore, this system is most useful for integration of XML technology in web-based management of construction documents.
