AbstractHuman resource development (HRD) efforts of companies play important roles in organizational development. In business, people are a valuable asset for companies. The growing companies need competent people to execute the work and run business smoothly. Human resource development is a means of investing in people. The practice and attitude toward investment in developing people among companies are interesting especially in the construction business. This thesis studies the investment in training, organization's attitude toward HRD policy, and employee's attitude toward the HRD practices of companies, and also suggests how to improve HRD practices in construction firms. Target companies are selected from companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Five construction companies and four real estate companies participated in the research during November 2001 to February 2002. The data from real estate companies were used as comparators with construction on some issues. The results show that the total expense on training in the year 2001 for construction is less than the amount spent by the sampled real estate companies. Regarding organizational attitudes, the perception of personnel managers and employees in construction companies toward the importance of human resource development are different. The employees perceived that company gave moderate importance to HRD whereas managers believe that companies put much effort into HRD. In addition, most employees in construction are neutral toward the HRD practices of companies. Finally employees feel neutral with salary and the work recognition (esteems) and they are satisfied with the needs of job security, social need and self actualization. Suggestions are made for improvement.
