AbstractThe potential of natural gas in Vietnam is rather high. The initial in place gas reserve is of about 3,000 billion cubic meter, whereas one third has been discovered, and several million cubic meter of it has presently been being produced per day, mainly for fuel (power generation and LPG), bringing back significant benefit for the national economy. However, the gas industry of Vietnam is at the start of the development so it is necessary to establish orientations for gas production and utilization with attempt to make full and economic use of natural gas resources for the progress of industrialization and modernization of Vietnam. That kind of work should not be considered separately from the development plan of gas sector, oil sector, power sector, coal sector and other energy sectors. It is necessary to study the role of natural gas based on the whole energy system point of view. This study, with the aided of AIM-Country model will analyze the potential role of natural gas in the whole energy system to the year 2020 under several scenarios of natural gas utilization scope, supply availability, price and special with the consideration of some emission mitigation options such as carbon tax and emission reduction constraints.
