AbstractAn attempt was made to treat piggery wastewater using the innovative Repetitive Chemical Precipitation technology (RCP). Six coagulants used in this research were Aluminium Sulfate (Ah(S04) 3), Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC), Ferric Chloride (FeCh), Ferric Sulfate (Fe2(S04)3), Ferrous Sulfate (FeS04) and Ferrous Chloride (FeCh). From the experiments, RCP process was found to achieve high removal efficiency of organic compounds and nut1ients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in piggery wastewater. The optimal dose ofFeCh, Fe2(S04) 3, FeCh and FeS04 was found to be 2.0 g/L, 0.3 125 g/L for PAC and 2.5 g/L for Ah(S04)3. And optimal pH level was 4 to 5 for all coagulants except for FeCh and FeS04, which had an optimal pH of more than 6. Average efficiency of 70%- 80% for COD, 90%-95% for SS and 80%-90% for Org-N and TP were found to be removed within a few minute reaction. Biodegradable ratio (BOD5/COD ratio) increased up to 65% after the application of RCP process. In addition, it was found that no significant effects of mixing intensity, mixing time and settling time on the RCP Process. This process can be repeated two or three times to reduce the concentration of pollutants in the wastewater. Results obtained after the 3rd repetition showed an increase in removal efficiency for COD, SS and Color removal from 67%, 93% and 79% to 74%, 99% and 94% respectively when using Aluminium Sulfate as acid coagulant. Analysis of Aluminium concentration in treated wastewater and sludge from RCP process resulted that about 0.56 mg/L of Al remained in effluent treated wastewater, and 161.54 and 237.35 mg/L of Al in sludge from acid coagulation and neutralization step. Leachability of Aluminium in sludge was found 1.6 mg/L while guideline for crop irrigation quality recommended maximum 5.0 m/L Al. Average sludge generated from RCP process for the treatment of piggery wastewater and its CST value was ranged 8,000-11,000 mg/L and 7 .6-26.1 sec respectively depending on types of coagulants used in RCP process.
