Abstract | This study was conducted to investigate the applicability of three stage anaerobic filter (Up flow Anaerobic Floating Filter - UAFF) system for coconut and piggery wastewaters. It was achieved more than 90% of removal rate for COD, BOD and turbidity with average organic loading rate of 1.21 kg COD I m 3 day, for coconut wastewater as an influent to the system during the laboratory scale experiment. Average biogas yield during this experiment was 2.2 litres I litre of coconut wastewater I day with full flame condition. Application of full scale UAFF system for coconut wastewater treatment is recommended for further study, to overcome the typical drawbacks of the system especially due to the seasonal variations of influent characteristics. No degradability of coir fibre was recorded due to the acidity of coconut wastewaters. Average removal rate of COD, TS and SS was 89.9%, 81.5% and 96.2% consequently, during the application of laboratory scale UAFF unit with average organic loading rate of 2.16 kg I m 3 day, by using piggery wastewater as an influent to the system. Average COD removals of 1 51 , 211d and 3rd reactors are 40.3%, 30.0% and 19.6% respectively. Initial solid separation of the influent should be an important pait especially for piggery wastewater to avoid the unnecessary clogging of the system. Average biogas yield was 1.39 litres/ kg of pig dung /day. Application of pilot scale UAFF unit for piggery wastewater shows high removal rate of COD, BOD, TS and SS. Since this is the initial stage of this experiment, further completion is necessary to justify the results. |
