AbstractThis research intends to identify hazardous locations along the Friendship Highway Section in Khon Kaen Municipality, Thailand. Its aims to display the results through application of Geographic Information System (GIS), and to propose some recommendations for road safety improvement on hazardous locations. Initially, this study attempted to employ different techniques to determine the critical accident index, but eventually this study employed the Rate Quality Control Method (RQCM) based on the adopted severity index rate to identify hazardous locations along the studied section of 13.55 km of the Friendship Highway Section in Khon Kaen. It was known that twenty two 100-m. sections are classified as hazardous locations along this selected Friendship Highway section in Khon Kaen. Furthermore, in order to investigate the effect of the divided section length, several divided section lengths such as 200 m, 300 m, 400 m, 500 m and 600 m are examined to determine their impact on the identification of hazardous locations. It was found that the shorter the section, the more accurate result can be obtained but this may not be economical viable and may required substantial calculations. Finally, this research recommended the 100- m. section length to be used for analysis due to the most accurate results. Several recommendations were proposed to improve the safety along these identified hazardous locations in Khon Kaen.
