AbstractRepresenting up to 5 to 7 percent of world trade, counterfeiting has become a very serious issue with huge economic implications. Economic impacts of intellectual property rights infringement can be interestingly analyzed when adopting a double point of view: the company whose products are being copied, and the country that hosts counterfeiters. Measuring these impacts first requires to understand the notion of intangible assets, and to be able to measure their value. Being aware of the economic extent of product piracy, and having noticed some major reasons that enable parallel networks to develop, we will focus on which strategies should be implemented in order to cope efficiently with the issue. Our focus will be on two major problems: the emergence of new technologies that make the existing Intellectual Property Rights system inefficient and that boost product piracy; and the fact that we want to apply "western" Intellectual Property laws to developing countries, which have different approaches to the notion of prope1iy.
