AbstractThe past years saw an unprecedented battle for market share between retailers in Thailand, with nationalistic rhetoric attempting to dive1t attention from the key issue: What's best for the customer? The quote of "if you don't discount you'll lose business fast" seems to be the issue here. Money is likely to talk louder than nationalistic appeals to the public not to purchase from the lower-priced "foreign store" down the road. Besides small retailers' calls for protection from the government, Prime Minister Thaksin is not willing to discourage foreign investment and deter modernisation of the trade system. The expansion of hype1markets has not only affected traditional groce1y shops, but also foreign supermarket chains and depa1tment stores. Repositioning strategies to counter discount prices are often to move up-market by improving the quality of products and services. Retail business is in constant mutation and only the fast moving chains will keep their market shares. New fo1mats are also created in order to capture niche markets such as petrol station convenience stores and modem inner-city workers supermarkets.
