AbstractThis study was under taken to develop on-line wastewater quality monitoring technique for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) using spectrophotometric method. Influent and effluent samples of three laboratory-scale WWTP activated sludge units fed with domestic wastewater, were determined for the concentration of total COD (TCOD), soluble COD (SCOD), SS, VSS, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, phosphate and total phosphorus, using the wet chemical and instrumental methods and for their light absorbance using spectrophotometer at the wavelength of 200-800 nm. The correlation relationships between the absorbance data and the wet chemical and instrumental method data were developed using the multiple linear regression (MLR) and the partial least squares (PLS) regression statistical methods. The conelation relationships of the above water quality parameters developed from the MLR with stepwise selection method, had the highest R2 (0.8140 - 0.9975). These correlation relationships were validated with another set of the water quality data with satisfactory results and indicating their feasibility for use in on-line wastewater quality monitoring. When tested with wastewater samples subjected to increase solid contents, the correlation relationships for TCOD, SS and VSS parameters could predict the concentration satisfactory An on-line monitoring apparatus set up for WWTP performance was proposed, consisting of light source, flow cell, spectrophotometer and computer for data processing, with using of the developed correlation relationships. This on-line apparatus should be able to predict the concentration of the wastewater characteristics with high accuracy
