AbstractSince tillage is the operation which makes a major contribution to the cost of crop production, there has been attempts to reduce the degree of the operation so that the total cost can be minimized. This study was conducted to evaluate the results of conventional tillage (CT) and three different conservation tillage methods, namely, no-tillage (NT), inverted-T seeder (IT), and double disk opener type seeder (DD) on soybean yield under three different straw management methods, i.e., burnt rice straw (SI), unburnt rice straw and spread by hand (S2), and cut-straw removed (S3) in a strip-plot design with four replication on a loamy sand soil in Phitsanulok, a province in the northern part of Thailand. The operation cost which including cost for land preparation, planting, and seed were reduced 8% for NT, 32% for DD, and 57% for IT compared with the operation cost in CT (5,341 Baht/ha). The soil bulk density at 0-5 cm and 5-10 cm soil depth was higher in all three conservation methods than that in CT method. Additionally, soil moisture content in conservation tillage methods was higher than that under CT method. The soil moisture content was lower in burnt rice straw than in the unburnt as well as in cut-straw removed plots. Rice straw covering on the soil surface reduced the amount of grass weeds, while, CT method reduced the amount of grass weeds and increased the amount of broad-leaf weeds. In this experiment, the percentage of seed emergence was found to be higher under direct drilling method than in broadcasting. The results obtained from this one cropping season experiment indicated that the grain yield under three conservation methods was significantly lower than that under conventional tillage.
