AbstractThis study analyzes the potential sources of conflict between the Japanese management and Thai staff in Japanese manufacturers in Thailand. Japan is the single largest foreign investor in Thailand, but conflict between the Japanese management and Thai staff may limit the success of Japanese firms. Three approaches were used to examine possible sources of conflict between Japanese managers and their Thai subordinates: national cultural characteristics, key Japanese HRM practices, and Japanese unique business and social behaviors. A survey methodology was used to collect data from Japanese managers and their Thai subordinates on general work-related attitudes and observations about the work environment. Several key findings emerged. The Japanese managers objected to the Thai work style and the Thai staff objected to the Japanese interaction style. Differences were found in all cultural difference dimensions, but most of these differences were contrary to expectations based on previous research. Results indicated that most Japanese HRM practices are transferable to Thailand, although some may require adjustments. The seniority system is the least transferable Japanese practice. Findings were discussed in terms of previous research. The study's implications and limitations were discussed, and recommendations were made for Japanese companies operating in Thailand and for future research.
