AbstractThe increased use of joint ventures around the world is noted in many research studies. Foreign direct investment (FDI) through manufacturing joint ventures in Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam has been substantial. Many joint ventures are reported to suffer from poor performance and provide Jess satisfaction to the partners. Past research has analyzed success factors to assess their impact on the satisfaction and overall perfo1mance of joint ventures. In this study, partner attributes, learning and management styles are expected to relate positively to the satisfaction and the overall performance. The findings of past research studies were based on data collected from the joint ventures in a developed countty or from the foreign partner in the joint ventures in a developing country. In contrast, this study uses the perspectives of local and the foreign partners in the manufacturing joint ventures in tlu-ee developing countries in Asia. This focus on the developing countries adds a complementary perspective to the current literature on the key success factors in joint ventures in developed countries. The respondents were from 236 manufacturing joint ventures. The results demonstrated that higher trnst between the partners, cultural similarities, mutual benefits, and cooperation exerted a direct, significant and positive influence on the perceived satisfaction. Satisfaction was also positively related to the perceived overall performance. Management styles and learning outcomes had a significant, positive and a direct influence on the perceived overall performance. These results are similar to past research relating to manufacturing joint ventures in developed countries.
