AbstractIn view of growing concern about the sustainable rural livelihoods in rural areas of Vietnam, this study was conducted in the two mountain districts to assess the role of aquaculture and its contribution in sustainable rural livelihoods of people in Cao Bang province. By adoption of the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach of the Department for International Development, the study has viewed the different aspects of the rural livelihoods. Different capital assets available at community and household levels and the accessibility of local people to these assets were generally analyzed. The level of access to the capital assets was deeply constrained by the vulnerability context. However, in association with the transforming structures and processes, local households has coped with the affected factors by reallocation and mobilization of their resources in different appropriate strategies in agricultural production in general and aquaculture in particular as well as their household economy. The aquaculture practice is still developed lowly at the both level of intensification and production, but it played an important role in household income contribution and food supply. There was a considerable different in level of contribution between pond fish culture and the rice fish culture. In the study areas, different groups of household have different accesses to aquaculture. The poor households have less access to the resources and capital assets, and aquaculture activities seem to benefit for middle and better-off households.
