AbstractThis feminist ethnographic and historical study assess and analyses women's agency in contributing to security in their status as displaced persons, through their livelihoods activities and social activities, in the context of interaction, both within their ethnic indigenous group, and with the majority population in their place of settlement. This interaction is analyzed with relation to its contribution to security, which is defined as a state of 'well being'. The specific displaced persons context of the Badjaos women who migrated to Urban Manila, from their place of origins in Southern Philippines is examined. They have settled in various places in Urban Manila, one of which is the research site- the Baclaran Market site, a striving open market, located by a busy road, and by fancy restaurants. They are engaged in vending and begging, and living and sleeping in the open streets. They are exercising their agency on a daily basis in attaining particularly subsistence security. The Badjaos are a community in Baclaran Market site, in a lot of way still steeped in their traditional way of life, and actively practicing this. As an ethnic minority group they stand at the center margin position within the dominant ethnic discourse in Manila. As the women interact within the minority and majority group, they acquire mixed identities or multiple identities, in which security and insecurity both lies, given that as women, they are also position at the center of ethnicity, as eloquently captured by Armstrong's (1982) term, acting reproducing particular group ethnicity often standing as "symbolic bodyguard" (as cited in Yuval-Davis, 1993:627).
