AbstractIn the conventional IP networks, traffic on the Internet often causes congestion in routers. Therefore, the Internet must overcome these challenge and bottlenecks to provide the Quality of Service (QOS) for the various existing applications over the Internet especially to serve for multimedia traffic in the near future. Constant Bit Rate (CBR) coding is attractive for delivery over networks. Compare with CBR coding, Variable Bit Rate (VBR) offers some advantages such that for the same perceived video quality, CBR encoding may generate an output rate significantly higher than the average rate of the corresponding VBR stream. Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a recent network technology that transmits traffic effectively and supports QoS over the Internet. Based on MPLS, there are many things supporting the desire to use explicit instead of hop-by-hop routing. Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) is a set of procedures by which one Label Switching Router (LSR) informs another LSR of the meaning of labels used to forward traffic between and through them. Constraint-based Routing Label Distribution Protocol (CR-LDP) offers the opportunity to extend the information use to setup paths beyond what is available for the routing protocol. A Constraint-based Routing Label Switched Path (CR-LSP) can be set up based on explicit route constraints, QoS constraints and other constraints to support the transmission ofreal-time multimedia traffic. In this research study, we evaluate the performance of network utilization in term of the throughput and percentage of packet loss of each traffic flow in normal IP network and MPLS network by using two types of VBR traffic sources such as Exponential and Pareto on/off distribution traffic sources. From the investigation results, it is found that the network utilization in the case of MPLS with class based queuing and priority is the highest comparing with the case of normal IP routing and the case of explicit routing. Thus, MPLS network with class based queuing and priority is effective to support QoS of the traffic over the Internet network.
