Abstract | Mobile communication systems have a vital role in communications. With the development of mobile communications networks, mobile messaging has become a very popular and reliable way for communicating with almost anybody, at anytime and from almost anywhere. One of the most important messaging services is Short Message Service (SMS), which has a great success with rapid growth in wireless data service. Short message service is transferred on the signalling channel, sharing load with signalling traffic of voice. Traffic measurement is a tool to gain more knowledge and better understanding of SMS from the traffic point of view. Only few studies in SMS environment have been reported, and they do not include any traffic measurement studies in SMS. This research proposes and classifies SMS traffic characteristics, measures SMS traffic of an operating CDMA cellular network of "Skytel" Company and GSM cellular network of "Mobicom" Company in Mongolia. SMS traffic measurement data consisting of weekly and daily traffic profiles with resolution of one hour, are analyzed and compared with available voice traffic data. This report also forecasts the SMS gateway traffic demand between Skytel and Mobicom mobile network companies. It was found that there is a linear correlation between daily voice traffic and SMS traffic. The ratio of daily voice call attempts to SMS attempts was 5: 1. Hourly traffic profiles during a day have similar shapes for SMS and voice except a clear peak period during 7 PM to 11 PM in SMS compared to voice traffic profiles. |
