AbstractPowerline communications is not new since the in-home application has been used for many years. However, outdoor powerline communications for high speed data is still under studying and some field trials have just been carried out in Europe and the US. Although powerline communications has some difficulties due to noise and multi-path effects, the obvious advantage of using the existing powerline for access networks has recently attracted many telecommunication service providers. Particularly, in rural communications solutions, powerline communications may become a good candidate for access networks in some certain terrains, especially, in hill and mountain which are not suitable for wireless local loop. The main purpose of this research is to study powerline communications (PLC) applied for network access. The study focuses on how to model powerline distribution networks in different types and topology of electrical cables in a certain area. The transfer functions from these models would be used as a beginning of the tools for designing powerline communication networks in rural areas, especially, in An Hoa and An Binh villages in Vietnam. Finally, the results of the research also show that new communication method using PLC for access network in rural areas is available. The PLC solution for rural area may become a strong competitor in comparison with the others by reduced cost and bringing more services to customers such as internet access and multimedia services without setting up new cable systems.
