AbstractAd hoc wireless networks are becoming increasingly popular thanks to the widespread use of mobile and handheld devices. One of the features of ad hoc wireless networks is dynamic topology. This is caused by the random participation of nodes in the network. The participation of nodes in the network depends on the mobility of nodes as well as the node owners' behavior. Since battery power is limited, it is not suitable for a node to continuously participate in the network operation. As a result, for the same probability that a node participate in the network, participation in and departure from the network at different frequency may cause different levels of effect on the performance and, thus, the ability to satisfy the QoS requirements of the network. This research work addresses this problem and proposes a mathematical model to study the effect of the frequency of network participation of nodes on the ability to satisfy the QoS requirements of the network. The probability of route discovery is calculated as a function of the frequency of network participation of nodes, with the route discovery time requirement as a parameter. The formula for determining the maximum frequency of network participation of nodes is also provided. The simulation is performed to investigate this effect, beside mathematical calculation, and some differences in the results between the simulation and mathematical calculation are also discussed.
