AbstractHybrid wireless networks have been seen as a solution to provide internet connectivity for a mobile terminal in ad hoc networks and expand the coverage of infrastructured wireless networks by ad hoc mechanism. In this research, we study the internet connectivity for mobile terminal in hybrid wireless networks and how a mobile node can obtain gateway information. Then three gateway discovery methods are evaluated and compared according to the packet delivery ratio, average end-to-end delay and Ad hoc On Demand Vector (AODV) overhead by using Network Simulator. Observing the changing of the advertisement interval, we see that the packet ratio is nearly the same, regardless of which gateway discovery is used. When the advertisement interval increases the average end-to-end delay for the proactive and hybrid gateway discovery method has increase trend while the AODV overhead has decrease trend. The advertisement interval does not affect the reactive gateway discovery method. Furthermore, this research shows that the maximum speed of mobile node affected the performance of gateway discovery methods. When the maximum speed increases, the packet delivery ratio decreases while the average end-to-end delay and the AODV overhead increases.
