AbstractThis thesis evaluated the performance of the bore tunneling for the raw water supply aqueduct of the Bangkok Metropolitan crossing underneath the Tha-Chin River, west of Bangkok. The study focused on the evaluation on the performance and difficulties of shield tunneling operated in open face and earth-pressure-balanced modes in stiff clay and water bearing sand and of the segmental lining. The problems and difficulties arisen were considered to determine their causes and evaluated remedial and preventive measures, e.g. face collapses during tunneling, damages and leakage of segmental lining, unsuccessfulness of permeation grout and etc. It was proven that the EPB shield could successfully advance in the kind of soils and ground water condition. The collapses of tunnel face were attributed to ill-judgement in adoption of face control mode of the shield. The damage and leakage of segments were related to its backfill grouting, joint and detailed bolting design.
