AbstractThe European Union (EU) was debut to use the new Euro currency on January 1, 1999. Initially, 11 EU member countries of the total 15 replaced their local currencies. During the introductory period, their trade and service prices within the EU and with non-EU nations will be quoted both in Euro and in the local currency. At present, the euro zone have 12 member countries with Greece as the newest member. Then, as of January l , 2002, the new bills and coins will be circulated, automatically voiding the local currencies. The changeover of the euro will be a major event for international monetary relations and monetary systems. This changeover will have important implications not only for the euro zone and EU, but also for other countries in the world. Thus, Thailand is inevitably expected to feel the effect of EURO. This research study provides an overview of the changeover of the euro. Also, the research discusses the effect of EURO on Thai economy. In terms of Thai macroeconomic level, even though the euro may affect on trade relation and foreign direct investment between Thailand and EU, the changeover of EURO has minor impact compared to the effect from EU non- tariff barriers. In the view of Thai businessmen, especially importers and exporters, they believe that the euro will not be severe effect on their business. Moreover, many Thai businessmen are still puzzled by the implication of the euro to their business. Many of them are not ready to quote or accept quotations in the euro for their international transaction because they may not have strong trade relation with EU. However, the euro might be a major impact on Thai economy in the long run, so the understanding on the effect of the euro will be beneficial.
