AbstractThis study presented the prediction of the ground movement behavior due to the shield tunnelling in the Bangkok MRT Blue Line project by the aid of the empirical and numerical analyses. The ground movements from tunnelling were summarized with respect to influencing factors, namely: the soil stratigraphy, tunnel geometry, TBM face pressures, the operation of TBM and the presence of adjacent structures. The surface settlement along the tunnel alignment was in the range of 5 mm to 100 mm, while the surface settlement in the settlement array was in the range of 7 mm to 53 mm corresponding to the ground loss about 0.3-2.3 %. Settlement trough in most instrumented section can be described by the Peck's Gaussian equation. The two-dimensional numerical simulations based on finite difference method analysis using FLAC2D were performed to simulate the behavior of ground movement. Reasonable agreement between the predicted settlements and the monitoring filed data were obtained corresponding to the appropriate ground loss expressed in percent relaxation.
