AbstractThe study concerns with the geotechnical investigation on properties of rock mass and its influence on stability of cavern excavation of the Khiritharn pumped storage project Thailand. The caverns are located at a depth of 385 min a rock sequence mainly composed of sandstone and sandstone interlaminated with shale. The strength and deformability of rock mass in the research study were evaluated from laboratory tests. Rock core samples were collected from the location of cavern to determine the strength, static and dynamic modulus. The rest of the data were obtained from the previous and concurrent studies made by the EGAT and AIT. The mechanical properties of the rock mass were also empirically estimated on the basis of rock mass classification. The rock mass classification systems are the RMR, EPDC's and GSI. The comparison between the systems was carried out. Stress and displacement analysis was made to evaluate stability condition in the excavation of the caverns at the depth of 385 m. Analysis was made by means of the finite difference method (FDM) FLAC-2D. The results were compared with those from previous study using a different code, PHASE2. Comparison between analysis results from these computer codes was done. Results of analysis by FLAC 4.0 showed reasonable agreement with results from PHASE2.
